The U.S. House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act in a 417-3 vote to address costs created by data centers and other large computational loads. The bill would require states to consider standards intended to prevent existing electricity customers from paying for incremental generation, transmission and distribution upgrades. Loads larger than 100 MW could face financial assurance requirements and guarantees covering costs if projects exit early.
