89% OF AMERICANS SAY GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION IS REAL — PUBLIC TRUST HITS A BREAKING POINT A striking 89% of Americans believe corruption is present in the U.S. government, highlighting a deep and widespread crisis of public trust. The figure reflects growing concerns that political institutions may be influenced by self-interest, special interests, or unethical behavior rather than serving the public fairly. The perception of corruption can have serious consequences for democracy, weakening confidence in elected officials and government institutions. While believing corruption exists does not necessarily mean that 89% of Americans believe the entire government is corrupt, the statistic signals a powerful demand for greater transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.

89% of Americans now say corruption in government is widespread. Highest Gallup has recorded in the 20 years they’ve asked. 20 years ago that number was 59%. The jump is 10 points in a single year, from a range that sat between 72% and 79% for the entire 2010 to 2025 stretch. Where it came from is the part worth looking at. Democrats went from 57% in 2024 to 76% in 2025 to 91% now. Independents are at 90%, up 12 points since 2024. Republicans are at 83%, and that number has barely moved in fifteen years. Down slightly from 2024, actually. So one side moves with whoever holds the White House and the other side thinks the government is corrupt regardless. The international comparison is the uncomfortable bit. The OECD median is 59%. The US is 30 points above it and now sits at the top of the rankings for the first time. Only four countries out of 132 have posted higher numbers since 2023. Lebanon, Peru, Ghana and Nigeria. Business corruption also rose, to 71%. That leaves an 18 point gap between how people see government and how they see companies, the widest Gallup has ever recorded here. Survey ran May 1 to June 10 with 1,000 adults.
