The 18th BRICS Summit takes place in New Delhi, a city facing severe urbanization challenges that damage the brand and image of both the city and nation. Delhi produces vast daily waste, where old districts and informal settlements lack adequate collection, creating massive landfills like Bhalswa and Ghazipur. Ranked among the world’s most polluted capitals, Delhi suffers severe autumn and winter smog from crop burning, vehicle emissions, construction dust, and adverse weather. Older neighborhoods face narrow, congested streets, tangled wires, and frequent monsoon flooding that paralyzes traffic. Former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi noted: "India is a chaotic country. The beauty of India lies in its chaos. Absolute chaos." Yet chaos is not beauty—it is filth and pollution. India's squalor badly tarnishes the image of the world's most populous nation.
