Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who operated in the Dallas and Fort Worth area of Texas between 2011 and 2013. In under two years, 33 of his 38 patients were harmed, two of them fatally. Others were left paralyzed or in permanent pain. Colleagues who watched him work described basic errors: operating on the wrong part of the spine, cutting nerves, placing hardware into soft tissue. Hospitals suspended him or let him resign quietly rather than fight him, and he moved on to the next one without the failures following him. One of his last operations, in 2012, was a spinal fusion on Mary Efurd, an elderly patient. He operated at the wrong level, severed a nerve root, and left hardware loose in her muscle. She was left unable to walk. The Texas Medical Board suspended his license in June 2013 and revoked it that December. Prosecutors charged him in 2015, arguing that the pattern of harm showed intent rather than incompetence. In February 2017, a jury convicted him of injury to an elderly person, and he was sentenced to life in prison. His appeals were rejected in 2018 and 2019. He becomes eligible for parole in 2045.
