A Final Fantasy VI remake isn’t impossible, but don’t expect it soon.
FFVII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi says the team is focused on finishing the FFVII Remake trilogy, so there are no plans for an FFVI remake.
Original FFVI co-director Yoshinori Kitase says remaking the game would be a huge challenge because it has a massive cast of playable characters, multiple story paths, and a ton of optional content.
Turning all of that into a modern AAA game would take a lot of time and resources.
Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida says fans shouldn’t expect remakes of Final Fantasy VI, VIII, or IX to follow the same path as Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Speaking during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026, he explained that remaking any of those classic games to modern AAA standards would be an enormous project.
Each could need four or even five separate releases due to the content that would have to be rebuilt and expanded.
Recreating them at the same level as FFVII Remake would take years and massive resources.
