Gianni Infantino has been asked to stay away from a youth football tournament in a sign of deepening divisions caused by his attempted World Cup sell-off, Sky News has learnt. The FIFA president was told in a letter on Friday by the region's football leadership that his presence at the event in the Dominican Republic this weekend would 'undermine' the children's matches. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been forced to scrap plans to sell off a stake in the World Cup after a global backlash. In comments exclusively obtained by Sky News, he said: "Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place. "Our purpose has always been - and will always be - to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed. "Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, and particularly in those countries that mostly need our support." On Tuesday, football's global governing body had confirmed Infantino wanted to launch a subsidiary worth $ 20bn (£15bn) and sell off more than 20% of the new FIFA Forward Enterprise by raising $4.2bn (£3.16bn).

Gianni Infantino is rapidly losing support to remain as FIFA president, Sky News has learned, after European nations announced a World Cup boycott if he goes ahead with selling part of the tournament to private investors. At least 90 of the 211 football associations are now against Mr Infantino's venture after North America's CONCACAF region joined UEFA in publicly rejecting selling off ownership of the World Cup.
