In October 2001, weeks after 9/11, U.S. Army Special Forces teams inserted into northern Afghanistan as part of the initial response. Their mission was to link up with Northern Alliance commanders, provide intelligence and training, and coordinate U.S. airstrikes. The rough terrain meant that they had to use horses to reach the objective town of Mazar-i-Sharif, where a pivotal battle ensued. U.S. operators and their Afghan North Alliance counterparts advanced under fire and directed airstrikes that destroyed Taliban armor, artillery, and troop concentrations. The rapid fall of the city killed hundreds of enemy fighters, captured hundreds more, and caused over 1000 defections. It opened northern supply routes and delivered a major psychological blow to the Taliban regime. This campaign was famously known as the Horse Soldiers. It was the first and only U.S. horse mounted cavalry charge in the 21st Century.
