Before mass vaccination, nearly every child had measles by age 15—usually a mild case. Older individuals were naturally immune. Today, permanent disability or death from measles in the U.S. is rare. The measles vaccine is given as part of the MMR, but risks remain. Immunity wanes—by age 15, about 60% of vaccinated children are again susceptible to subclinical infection. The MMR package insert notes it hasn’t been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential or impairment of fertility.
