Nintendo’s stock dropped 12% after the Switch 2 price increase to $499 in the US from the expected $449.99.
The change starts in September 2026 for Western markets due to higher memory and component costs plus tariffs and exchange rates.
The company also cut its sales forecast to 16.5 million units next year, down from nearly 20 million, but President Shuntaro Furukawa said the Switch 2 is selling faster than the original console
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has apologized to customers for the Switch 2 price increase. The adjustment is due to sustained rises in material costs that the company can no longer fully absorb.
Furukawa said: “We sincerely apologize to our customers for the considerable inconvenience and trouble this will cause. While we wanted to prioritize wide adoption, it was challenging to bear the rising costs over a long period. The new pricing does not fully account for all cost increases.”
The price in the United States will rise from $449.99 to $499.99, with similar increases in Canada, Europe, and Japan.
To help justify the higher price, Furukawa promised a strong software response, stating: “We will prepare a robust software lineup to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value. We will work diligently to overcome this barrier.”

Nintendo is under pressure from investors to raise the price of the Switch 2 console.
The Switch 2 is selling faster than any home game machine in history and has popular hits like Pokémon Pokopia and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but the company’s shares have dropped for five straight months the worst run in ten years and the stock has lost nearly half its value since August.
The problem is that Nintendo is selling the console at a loss due to higher costs for memory chips, shipping, and materials, so all eyes are on this Friday’s earnings report to see what the company will do about pricing.
