In Sibu, Sarawak, they don’t just burn paper money for Hungry Ghost Festival. They build a ship. This week at Fong Hwang San Ur Par Wang Kong Temple (凤凰山二霸王公庙), a 68-foot bamboo-and-paper vessel was set alight. Temple members spent weeks assembling it by hand — bamboo frame, paper skin, no metal. Then they burned it at night so the dead could sail. The meaning is local and specific. Early Chinese settlers left Fujian and Guangdong, built a life on the Rajang, and never went home. When they died, their descendants burned a junk so those souls could still make the crossing. The same fire also feeds the “good brothers” — wandering ghosts with no one left to offer them anything. After the ship goes, people rush the altar and grab the food. That’s 抢孤 — taking the blessing home. This is not a tourism board reenactment. It’s a Foochow/Hokkien custom that crossed the South China Sea and stayed. One temple in Sibu still does the full ship. That is how diaspora culture actually survives: not as a museum label, but as weeks of unpaid labour and a night of fire.
