Sony has started putting a notice on the box of new PS5 consoles: “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.”

Sony is reportedly getting back most of an estimated $508 million in U.S. tariff refunds after the tariffs that contributed to PS5 price increases were later ruled unlawful.
According to Sony CFO Lin Tao, most of the refund is going to the PlayStation business, with around 70% already received between April and June 2026.
Even so, Sony has not announced any plans to refund customers who paid the higher PS5 prices. The company is also facing a proposed class-action lawsuit in the U.S. claiming that some of the recovered money should be passed on to consumers.

Music CD sales in the U.S. are up 16% compared to last year, with Gen Z helping fuel the comeback.
Many younger people are buying CDs simply because they like owning their music instead of just streaming it.
It’s similar to what has happened with vinyl records. Streaming is still the biggest way people listen to music, but physical formats are making a comeback with younger fans.

Sony’s decision to stop making physical PlayStation games after January 2028 is now being used against the company in a major lawsuit.
The lawsuit, seeking $457 million in damages, argues that Sony can no longer claim players have the option to buy physical copies if they don’t like PlayStation Store prices.
Once new games are no longer released on disc, the PlayStation Store will become the main place to buy new PlayStation games.
Law professor Daniel Wallach told that Sony has “essentially destroyed its own defense,” because the company can no longer point to physical discs as an alternative for consumers.
