Prichard Colón has passed away at age 33, more than a decade after a brain injury in the ring left him in a persistent vegetative state.
He was an undefeated 23-year-old with a promising career when he fought Terrel Williams on October 17, 2015. During the fight, illegal rabbit punches to the back of his head went unchecked, even though he complained to the referee. He collapsed after the fight and needed emergency surgery for a brain bleed. He spent 221 days in a coma and never recovered.
The WBC created the "Prichard Colón Rule" after this to ban rabbit punches. But it was already too late for him.
Rest in peace, champ 😔
