Witcher 3 director recently discussed RPG games and said two new titles stand out because they feel fresh and different and take him back to RPG golden era: Crimson Desert and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He said “I think that this [idea] is growing these days, because when you look at Clair Obscur, or Crimson Desert right now, those games are different. They are not a copy of other AAA games, but delivering something quite fresh. And I’m really glad of it because I’m starting to feel like I did in the 1990s when I played games on my 286 PC, or even on the Atari where every game was a different game. Every game was some unknown.” He said that most games now only focus in make money and are not original, he wants more devs take risks like expedition 33 and games feel new again

The Witcher 4 is leaving CD Projekt Red’s REDengine behind and moving to Unreal Engine 5. But according to co-CEO Michał Nowakowski, it wasn’t because of Cyberpunk 2077’s messy launch. When asked about the decision, he said: “The issue with Cyberpunk was not really REDengine itself.” He explained that CD Projekt Red’s goal was never to become a tech company: “The dream of the company was actually never to make technology.” The focus was always on creating ambitious games and telling stories in the most immersive way possible. The moment that changed everything was seeing The Matrix Awakens demo running on Unreal Engine 5. That convinced CD Projekt Red to partner with Epic instead of continuing to build REDengine.

The Witcher 3 almost had a chain weapon 11 years ago, but the technology simply wasn’t there yet. CD Projekt Red says the idea of giving Geralt a chain weapon existed during development of the original game, but various technical challenges made it impossible to implement properly. Now, with the tech developed for The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, the team finally made it work, Geralt can use the chain to whip and lasso enemies, It also fits the Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, where Geralt uses a chain fairly regularly. CDPR says the weapon was particularly designed to work against some of the DLC’s new enemies

The Witcher 3 new dlc story will have Dandelion is at the center of it, CD Projekt Red says Songs of the Past is meant to fill in a missing part of The Witcher 3’s story, not than setting up for The Witcher 4. Dandelion will take a much bigger role, with Geralt getting involved in another adventure connected to his old friend. The story will also explore Dandelion’s background and his homeland, giving the character more depth than we’ve seen before. The developers say they went back to the original Witcher books for inspiration, especially when working on Dandelion’s past.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past a DLC for an 11-year-old generated more Steam wishlist activity than any new game shown at Gamescom. According to Alinea Analytics, the expansion added an estimated 451,000 Steam wishlists between August 23 and August 30, well ahead of other games at the event.
