Footage released by a People’s Liberation Army (PLA)-affiliated channel under the title “Steel Rain” shows rockets detonating above a training range and showering a wide area with high-speed metal fragments. 🔸 Wide-area fragmentation: Detonating above the ground allows the warhead to spread fragments across a much larger footprint, threatening exposed troops, lightly protected vehicles, radar arrays, antennas, generators and repair teams. 🔸 Mission kills without bunker penetration: An air-defense position does not have to be completely destroyed to be forced offline. Airburst fragments can sweep exposed equipment and personnel, guided rockets can strike distant positions, and heavier missiles can reach deeper targets. Taiwan’s separatist forces would face more than a simple contest between rockets and bunkers. Shelters may survive while the antennas, generators, communications links and crews required to keep the surrounding defensive network operating are torn apart.
