MW 说它能讲字面的 fabric torn asunder(布被撕开),更常用来比喻,比如 a community torn asunder by the dispute,一个社区因为一场争执四分五裂。
The park was torn asunder by yesterday's microburst, and many of its trails have been blocked by fallen trees.
My roommate and I are poles asunder when it comes to …
give up the ghost:ghost
scream like a banshee:banshee
for centuries the word had a perfectly unfrightening set of meanings: "to visit often"
动词 haunt 也能说烦心事缠上你:that problem may come back to haunt you。
One of my favorite old haunts is ___.
The Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary
Webster's New Encyclopedic Dictionary
Chambers Encyclopedic English Dictionary
