紫绫红蜡缬絁间缝裳（唐间色裙） Skirt Pieced with Purple Twill & Red Wax-Dyed Silk Bands (Tang Multi-Striped Jianse Skirt) A surviving example of the Tang-era multi-striped Jianse skirt. Vertical bands of red, green, purple and brown wax-dyed silk are stitched alternately, attached to a wide red silk waistband, designed as a single wrap-around garment. Batik patterns feature pearl roundels, birds and scrolling vines, representing the peak of Tang textile dyeing craftsmanship. Imported to Japan via envoys to Tang, it served as court dance costume.

We got the DNA of Li Keyong 李克用, father of the Later Tang Dynasty founder Emperor Zhuangzong 後唐莊宗 Li Cunxu 李存勗. Li Keyong male chromosome haplogroup is R1a1a1b2∼AM01870. Li Keyong was leader of Shatuo Turks, a confederation of Western Turks that migrated to China in the Tang Dynasty. His son Li Cunxu founded the Later Tang Dynasty. His genomic profile could be modeled as approximately 53.4% Ancient Northeast Asian (Mongolia_East_N) and 46.6% Western Steppe (Russia_Sarmatian.SG)

In Sibu, Sarawak, they don’t just burn paper money for Hungry Ghost Festival. They build a ship. This week at Fong Hwang San Ur Par Wang Kong Temple (凤凰山二霸王公庙), a 68-foot bamboo-and-paper vessel was set alight. Temple members spent weeks assembling it by hand — bamboo frame, paper skin, no metal. Then they burned it at night so the dead could sail. The meaning is local and specific. Early Chinese settlers left Fujian and Guangdong, built a life on the Rajang, and never went home. When they died, their descendants burned a junk so those souls could still make the crossing. The same fire also feeds the “good brothers” — wandering ghosts with no one left to offer them anything. After the ship goes, people rush the altar and grab the food. That’s 抢孤 — taking the blessing home. This is not a tourism board reenactment. It’s a Foochow/Hokkien custom that crossed the South China Sea and stayed. One temple in Sibu still does the full ship. That is how diaspora culture actually survives: not as a museum label, but as weeks of unpaid labour and a night of fire.
