August 12 is shaping up to be one of the most interesting days of the year for anyone watching the sky. Several major celestial events are happening around the same time: a total solar eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower near its peak, a new moon creating darker skies, and a planetary parade with multiple planets visible around this period. The total eclipse itself will cross parts of Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Portugal and northern Russia, while millions of people across Canada and parts of the northern U.S. will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Then, once the Sun goes down, the show isn't necessarily over. The Perseid meteor shower peaks around August 12–13, and this year it happens around a new moon. With very little moonlight washing out the night sky, conditions should be especially favorable for spotting meteors in places with clear, dark skies. There’s also a planetary parade around the same period, although the viral description of a perfect “six-planet alignment” is a little misleading. The planets aren't literally lining up in a straight line in space, they simply appear grouped along the same general part of the sky from our perspective. And one cool detail: the eclipse and new moon aren't just a random coincidence. Solar eclipses can only happen during a new moon, when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. For anyone viewing the partial eclipse: proper eclipse glasses are required when looking at the Sun. 🍿
