Four of Europe's biggest phone companies want to compete with Starlink from space. Between them they own zero satellites. Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone signed a letter of intent today to explore a joint bid for the EU's satellite-to-phone airwaves. They'd build the ground side in Europe and pick a satellite partner later. Starlink is already sending texts straight to regular phones from orbit. Anyone can sign a letter of intent.

Starlink ended June with 12.0 million subscribers. A year earlier it had 6 million. Hughes, the old leader in satellite internet: 622,000, down 24% in a year. Viasat in the US: 115,000 and still shrinking. Starlink is now 16 times bigger than both of them combined. Hughes and Viasat beam internet from satellites 36,000 km up. Starlink flies at about 550 km. Customers noticed the difference.

Elon says it got the name for being half the size of Macroharder, and then they doubled it. It will hold about 220,000 Nvidia GB300 chips, which DCD says likely needs more than 400 MW. This morning Elon said SpaceX tried to rent inference compute from AWS, Google or anyone. Same story as 2002. Elon went to Russia to buy a rocket, they didn't take him seriously, so he decided to build his own.

NASA's own Moon schedule puts five Starship firsts in this quarter, and only one is done so far. Still to come before the new year: the first V3 booster catch, the first ship catch, the first launch from Florida and the first reused V3 booster. Next quarter comes the first propellant transfer between two ships. The first crewed landing is set for Artemis IV in early 2028. The next ten weeks decide if that 2028 date holds.
