Automatic Collision Evasion makes it more crucial than ever that Tesla prepare a free basic version of FSD to replace basic Autopilot. For example, allow free for 1 drive a day, or when needed to avoid an imminent collision at no extra cost. I cannot think of a better sales pitch for FSD than it taking over to save you from a crash. You can pop up a dialog right after that and say "I saved your dumb ass. Isn't it finally time to subscribe now?" Tap here to subscribe for $99 a month. I like the one drive a day for free because it lets people, even those who aren't paying, try the software regularly to see how it's improving. But after they use their first drive... they have to drive home manually. They'll be subscribed by the time they get home. Or make it so the free version can only drive on sloth mode, or can't change lanes, or whatever. But every Tesla should have some basic self-driving functionality whether a subscription is active or not. It's not right to have a feature that can be the difference between life and death and limit it only to people whose credit card didn't get declined when the monthly subscription payment came in. What if someone dies because they didn't have $99 this month? Tesla's philosophy has always been that safety comes standard. I get introducing it initially with FSD users, but I think everyone wants this to be installed by default on every car. I am convinced that if implemented correctly, a free basic version of FSD that requires no subscription would actually drive the number of paid FSD users up, not down. I urge Tesla to give it a try and make sure Automatic Collision Evasion is available to as many of the 10 million Teslas on the road today as possible.
