Brazil has introduced a new child-protection law that changes how VPNs and other privacy tools are treated in criminal cases. Using a VPN remains legal in Brazil but using a VPN or other tool to hide an IP address while committing certain crimes against children is now an aggravating factor that can lead to a hard sentence. The law also gives police and prosecutors more power to access connection and registration data in urgent cases involving a child’s life and can obtain the information without a prior court order Brazilian officials are also pushing for a Discord ban after the death of a 13-year-old girl during a livestream, the Police asked for Discord to be suspended, but a judge rejected the request. 🇪🇺 EU ambassadors agreed to move ahead with a temporary extension of the legal framework allowing platforms like #WhatsApp# and #Messenger# to scan for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) — despite the @Europarl_EN already voting against it in March. The move, proposed by the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU, would be "unprecedented in the present circumstances where the European Parliament has rejected the Commission's proposal." Cyprus is now inviting member states to adopt a first reading position by June 29. Critics warn the push amounts to the Council trying to override parliamentary will. Activist group Fight Chat Control is urging users to contact their MEPs and national representations — calling it an attempt to advance mass surveillance under the guise of child protection.

Japanese voice actor Kazuki Atsumi, 31, has been arrested by Tokyo police on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. Investigators say he met the girl two years earlier while working at a temporary child protection shelter where she had stayed. Police allege the assaults occurred around 30 times at a hotel in Tokyo during May. Reports say Atsumi admitted to the acts and knew the girl was under 16, Japan’s legal age of consent. Atsumi had minor roles in the anime My Dress-Up Darling and Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider. After the arrest, his agency, Mausu Promotion, ended his contract and removed his profile from its website. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which oversees the shelter, apologized for the incident and said it is investigating whether any other children at the facility may have been affected.

Remember this: in order for someone to strip your rights/privacy they must have a suitable moral justification. The latest moral justification is child protection. The reason this works is because child protection is obviously important and necessary. Only a monster wouldn’t want children protected. Shocking Case in India: Public Punishment of the Perpetrators In Sri Ganganagar, a 13-year-old schoolgirl was abducted, sold to hotel owners, and gang-raped by up to 32 men in groups over the course of five days. The perpetrators held her captive in several hotels, forced her to drink alcohol, and abused her daily in groups of up to six men. The minor survived the horror. Following a police raid, she was freed alive. Outraged residents took matters into their own hands: They captured several perpetrators (at least 18 individuals), tied them together with ropes, and paraded them publicly through the streets—a clear form of public punishment and shaming. 🇪🇺 EU PARLIAMENT FAILS TO BLOCK CHAT CONTROL 1.0, EXTENSION TO 2028 MOVES FORWARD The European Parliament failed to block the extension of “Chat Control 1.0,” allowing voluntary scanning of certain private, unencrypted communications to continue until 2028 or until a permanent replacement is agreed. A majority of voting MEPs backed ending the regime, but the motion fell short of the required 361 votes, failing 314-276. Former MEP Patrick Breyer called the result “a farce,” arguing it undermines democracy and delays a more targeted child protection framework. The transitional framework permits voluntary scanning of private, unencrypted messages by providers such as Gmail, iCloud, Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, Skype and Xbox messaging to detect child sexual abuse material. Critics argue the system has produced large numbers of false reports while failing to demonstrate measurable improvements in prosecutions or child rescues. Negotiations on the permanent “Chat Control 2.0” proposal are set to resume in September.
