Rocket Lab has been selected by the @USSpaceForce for the Space Data Network Consortium and awarded $12m in contracts to support the development of a secure, high-speed global communications network for military operations. As part of the SDN Backbone program, Rocket Lab will design, test, and demonstrate technologies that enable seamless, secure, optical, communication, communications between satellites and ground system. Rocket Lab will also deliver an in-orbit demonstration of our Photon spacecraft, helping prove interoperability for the Space Force’s resilient, low-latency data transport network. $YSS: York Space Systems has been selected by the United States Space Force (USSF) for the Space Data Network Backbone (SDN-B) program. SDN-B is the USSF's program to deliver an integrated, space-based data network built on commercial technologies. The SDN-B will underpin the communications layer in support of a multitude of needs. Resilient assured communication will increasingly become an in-theater need, that will play a more decisive role in modern conflict, with mission effectiveness and survivability tied directly to assured, resilient communications across every phase of many missions. In an air superiority denied environment, space will be the enabling network of those communications and, as a result, the foundation of the defense architectures that will define the next era of warfighting.

$RKLB was selected as one of five vendors for the U.S. Space Force’s Space Data Network with a 2027 Photon mission set to test interoperability with $SPCX $2.3B network backbone. Rocket Lab’s $12M award covers a Photon spacecraft equipped with optical communications and networking hardware to prove secure links across satellites and ground systems.
