Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has criticised what he described as the growing tolerance of questionable or unverified academic credentials in positions of leadership. Obi argued that the issue should not be treated as a matter of political loyalty or personal support, but as a question of standards, accountability and the values Nigeria wants to uphold. He warned that excusing blurred, missing or unverified credentials because they belong to political allies could create a dangerous precedent for the country. According to Obi, normalising the abandonment of basic credential verification could eventually allow people without the required qualifications to occupy positions such as professors, doctors or judges. He said Nigeria must build a society where truth is not determined by political affiliation and where standards and accountability apply equally to everyone.
