Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake called on the industry to plan for "bunker mode," moving funds to addresses with hidden public keys, citing AI-driven math progress. Vitalik Buterin said not to scramble to move funds today.

Ethereum Researcher Warns AI Could Break Crypto Wallet Security Before Quantum Computers Do Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the crypto industry to prepare for "bunker mode," warning that advances in AI and mathematics could potentially break ECDSA within months rather than years, even before quantum computers become a threat. He recommended gradually moving assets to fresh addresses with unexposed public keys and rotating keys after signing transactions, while cautioning against panic or rushed migrations. Drake also urged major institutions to strengthen cold storage security, critical signers to consider hash-based signatures such as SPHINCS, and Ethereum developers to accelerate the transition toward hash-based cryptography.

Ethereum Foundation Grades 62 Hegotá EIPs, Targets Quantum-Resistant L1 by 2029 The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol Cluster published its Hegotá upgrade assessment and roadmap, grading 62 proposed EIPs. EIP-7805 (FOCIL, an anti-censorship proposal) and EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions, a core account abstraction proposal) were placed in the S tier as “must ship,” while 15 proposals were rated A tier as “expected to ship” and 28 were rejected. The Protocol Cluster also outlined research priorities through 2029, targeting quantum resistance across Ethereum L1’s execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029, with fast finality, post-quantum security, privacy, state, and zkEVM identified as five cross-upgrade research areas.

Ethereum Foundation has staked 4,938 $ETH ($7.86M) with @LidoFinance and is likely to stake more.
Ethereum's brain drain just turned into a manifesto Former EF researcher Dankrad Feist (@dankrad), the cryptographer behind Danksharding and now at Stripe and Paradigm's Tempo, says the only way to save Ethereum is to build a new organization "economically aligned with Ethereum and accountable to it." His ask: $1 billion to start, a leader who wants to fight, an accountable board, and permanent staking-revenue funding. His critique cuts: the Ethereum Foundation now holds less than 0.1% of all ethereum:native and gets no flow of staking or fee revenues. The new EF mandate centers on censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. Not growth. Eight senior EF researchers have left in 2026, five in May alone. ethereum:native trades near $2,100 with a $257B market cap, badly trailing bitcoin:native and solana:So11111111111111111111111111111111111111112. Laura Shin and others echo the same complaint: ideology over competitiveness. Is Ethereum's institutional layer up for the fight, or does the community build its own?

🚨STANI: ETHEREUM FOUNDATION’S IVORY TOWER ACADEMIC APPROACH IS DISCONNECTED FROM BUILDERS! Aave founder @StaniKulechov says almost everyone with common sense is against EIP-8361 and it may rank as one of Ethereum’s most resisted proposals ever, second only to ProgPoW. He argues the EF’s academic style won’t solve the real challenges. What people actually want is focus on problems that drive demand and make the network more competitive.

The Ethereum Foundation just cut a fifth of its staff The Ethereum Foundation (@ethereumfndn) has laid off 54 people, roughly 20% of its workforce, closing out a months-long restructuring. It says the cuts realign the organization around work "only EF can do," and reshape it into five divisions spanning protocol, users, community, and institutions. The foundation was clear that this was a structural choice, not a market panic, even as ethereum:native trades near 1,650 in a broad downturn. Departing staff get severance and grants to stay in the ecosystem. The EF is deliberately shrinking just as the core work spins outward, the same month Tom Lee called Ethereum's funding "secured" and ex-foundation researchers launched the Bitmine-backed Ethlabs.
