FIFA is accusing UEFA of spreading “misinformation” against its president, Gianni Infantino, ahead of next year’s election for FIFA president, escalating a legal battle between soccer’s two most powerful governing bodies.
At the center of the fight is an abandoned plan to put FIFA’s World Cup broadcasting, sponsorship and other commercial rights into a new company, then sell investors a $4.2 billion ownership stake in it.
UEFA argues FIFA’s hugely valuable World Cup commercial rights were being valued too cheaply in the proposed deal and that the plan was developed without proper consultation.
It is now seeking evidence in the U.S. for a planned criminal complaint against Infantino in Switzerland, while FIFA denies wrongdoing and says UEFA is trying to influence the election.
