Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, retweeted and praised an AI-generated trailer that reimagines the opening of Final Fantasy VI using modern 3D graphics like those in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. He called it “amazing.” The post is getting backlash online, most people are upset about using AI for creative work based on Square Enix games and worry it could replace real artists. But other people just say how badly fans want an official remake of the classic game.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki says the company no longer needs to aggressively push PS5 hardware sales as the console enters the latter half of its lifecycle. Rather than just trying to sell as many consoles as possible, Sony wants to make more money from the players already on PlayStation. With around 125 million monthly active users, the focus is now on recurring revenue and getting more value from each customer over time. It’s less about “sell more PS5s” and more about “make more from the players we already have.”

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki says the current memory shortage actually came at a “lucky” time for PlayStation. “It is lucky, you know, we are in the latter half of the lifetime cycle of a PS console. That means that we do not need to aggressively sell the console today. And rather than that, we’re focusing on recurring revenue from the current, you know, the user base.” PlayStation had 125 million monthly active users as of June 30, so Sony is increasingly focusing on revenue from its existing players through services like PS Plus.
