A crucial component of emergency management is hazard mitigation, which focuses on reducing or eliminating long-term risks to people and property caused by natural hazards. 🚨
One recent example of a successful hazard mitigation project managed by MEMA's Mitigation Unit is an infrastructure project that upgraded an undersized culvert (in the bottom left photo) in Bolton on Forbush Mill Road.
Historically, this critical roadway had experienced recurring flooding during heavy storm events, creating challenges for residents and emergency services accessing the Bolton Department of Public Works, the Bolton Transfer Station, and Route 117. 🛻
Ensuring the long-term resilience of the road was a priority for the community.
Using funds from FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, Bolton constructed an expanded culvert (in the bottom right photo). This upgrade significantly improves stormwater capacity, mitigates future flood risks, and secures uninterrupted access along this essential route. ✔️
MEMA is proud to play a role in helping communities across the state improve resilience to natural disasters, and we're grateful to all our partners on this project (top photo)!
