Marathon is going free-to-play for one week from June 2–9 alongside the launch of Season 2: Nightfall. Players on will be able to play the full game for free during the event, with progress carrying over if they decide to buy it later. The update also adds: - A new Night Marsh zone - PvE-focused modes - Matchmaking improvements - Vault/system updates A lot of people are seeing this as Bungie trying to bring players back after the game has been losing most of its players and declining interest since launch. Offering a full free week will surely get them some players, but idk man, I feel like the game is done.

Bungie has shared an update on the future of Destiny and Marathon and knows it has much work to do to win players back. The plan includes returning vaulted Destiny 2 content such as old campaigns, destinations, and raids. This will not happen overnight, as the content needs technical updates first. Destiny remains a major part of its plans, with the October Nightfall Refresh and December Symbiosis update incoming. Bungie wants to expand Marathon beyond its original extraction-shooter formula with more modes, including PvE, PvP, and PvPvE. The studio understands player frustration and must prove change through the games themselves. “We are not done with Destiny.”
