SOFTBANK’S $2B INTEL BET DELIVERS ¥1.33T QUARTERLY GAIN SoftBank’s April-June net profit fell 18% YoY to ¥347.3B, but still beat the ¥148.4B consensus. Total investment gains reached ¥1.85T, including a ¥1.33T gain on Intel after its shares more than tripled during the quarter. Vision Fund gains fell 65% to ¥255.7B, while OpenAI’s valuation remained unchanged. SoftBank has now committed more than $64B to OpenAI for a stake of around 13%. CFO Yoshimitsu Goto defended the investment, saying OpenAI retains an “overwhelming first-mover advantage” among consumers. SoftBank also plans to begin construction this year on its 10GW Ohio data center project and is in advanced talks with customers over long-term capacity leases. Goto dismissed AI overbuild concerns, pointing instead to an “overwhelming shortage” of computing capacity. Source: Nikkei Asia

Rosenblatt: 'we think the weakness in $CRWV today provides a buying opportunity'. "Bloomberg reported today that $META Meta (META, Buy) was planning a cloud business to sell AI computing power. The story noted that the company is considering selling access to various AI models hosted on its existing AI infrastructure, as well as "raw" computing capacity, as part of its Meta Compute initiative. During their annual meeting (May 27), Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told shareholders leasing cloud computing business was possible if they overbuild their data center capacity, which at the time he indicated they had not. Additionally, questioning on Meta's 1Q results call was focused on the ROIC of their CAPEX, so we are not surprised by today's messaging from Bloomberg's "people familiar with the matter." Our checks show no change in hyperscale posture toward GPU compute procurement, with GPU shortages the norm right now across the industry. We also do not think that Meta has the right to resell any of the capacity that they have leased from CoreWeave through 2032 to third parties. Net-net we think the weakness in CRWV today provides a buying opportunity and are reiterating our Buy rating and $250 price target on the name."

$META Rumors (which shouldn't be surprising) of Meta building a cloud business to sell excess AI capacity have shocked the data center plays. However, from the article itself, it seems the markets misunderstood the rumors. The key is "excess," which sounds similar to SpaceX overbuilding for what they immediately needed and selling capacity beyond that. A quote from Zuck from earlier in the year seems to confirm this. 'We haven't done that yet, because we think ​that we ⁠have a use for the compute. But obviously, if we get to a point where we feel that we have overbuilt, then ⁠that ​is an option that we have, and ​that is partially what gives us confidence in investing in building this out." Until we know more, this seems like an overreaction.
