If you want people to do open research on the impact of distillation to frontier progress, we happily would at @trillium_labs, but just need to scale up funding/compute before getting that done. Happy to make this happen sooner - you know where to find me!

Today’s AI takeoff stands on decades of open research and open infrastructure. The Transformer. Backpropagation. ImageNet. PyTorch. TensorFlow. JAX. CUDA. Linux. Books, the open Internet, and millions of open-source codebases on GitHub that became training data. Without all these, today’s AI labs and companies simply would not exist.

FAR AI is an independent non-profit publishing open research on how to make advanced AI systems safe and reliable. Our work is freely available to the entire research community.
OpenAI has published the full output of an unreleased internal model turned loose on open mathematical problems. Title: openai/math URL: ❓ What exactly was released? 722 manuscripts organized into 372 result families. Roughly 4,000 problems were posed to the model across the evaluation period, and the vast majority of results came out of the same procedure. It's Apache-2.0, with PDFs, source files, and citation info for each manuscript. ❓ Why release it? Because performance on existing benchmarks had plateaued. Once problems with known answers stopped being informative, they extended evaluation to open research questions. Each result consumed about three hours of thinking compute on average. ❓ Is the math guaranteed correct? No, and this is the part that matters most. The README states plainly that the collection holds results at different stages of verification, that not all of them have accompanying Lean formalizations, and that some unformalized results could have issues. The index marks formalized results with a Lean link so you can tell which ones are machine-checked. ❓ So the Riemann Hypothesis is solved? No. The two results singled out as exceptions are a zero-free region for the zeta function, which is a partial result, and a proof of the Hodge Conjecture restricted to CM abelian varieties, a specific class. Neither settles the conjecture itself, and the zeta writeup was human-edited for readability. #Mathematics# #OpenAI#

🚨 GPT 6 Astra is cracked at maths Astra solved 2/68 of Epochs open Erdos maths questions for a 3% score For context these are open research problems, not normal benchmark questions with known answers Imo this is one of the craziest Astra results yet

TL;DR: A multi-agent "prove-verify loop" solved five genuinely open math problems, spanning auction theory to online learning, with every result independently verified by domain experts. Title: Cogentic: Multi-Agent Orchestration for Automated Proof Discovery URL: Points 🧠 An orchestrator assigns multiple "provers" to different proof directions, mimicking a research group with adversarial verifiers that assume every step is wrong until justified 📚 A persistent "ledger" accumulates verified intermediate lemmas, so progress survives across rounds instead of being lost between attempts 🎯 Solved 5 open problems across online learning, auction theory, and mechanism design 📊 Improved the simple-vs-optimal revenue approximation factor from 5.2 to 3.52, and hit the optimal 1.5 price of anarchy for 2-bidder autobidding auctions 💰 Built on Gemini, with a modest inference budget — around O(100) Gemini calls for most problems ✅ All 5 results passed independent verification by domain experts and were developed into companion papers It feels genuinely significant that a properly orchestrated language model can tackle real open research problems, not just textbook exercises. #MathResearch# #MultiAgent#

It’s clear that Elon has a point regarding OpenAI. it was founded with an open research goal, not as a closed IP for-profit commercial endeavor. The trial is an existential risk for the company - openai broke its founding promise. it’s the biggest open bait and switch ever. that said, the actions of Sam and Greg also are understandable - they did what needed to be done - scale massively, grow revenue, compete. to not do so would be foolish. but it clearly betrayed the organization’s founding goals. Anthropic and Google are poised to take all in the case of a harsh ruling.
