Alibaba has banned employees from using Anthropic’s Claude Code after developers discovered a hidden backdoor that could detect whether users were connected to China. Anthropic confirmed the backdoor was real, saying it was added in March to detect unauthorized resellers and help prevent AI model theft through “distillation.” The company said it looked at signals like time zones, proxy settings, and other indicators to identify suspicious access. Alibaba has now classified Claude Code as high-risk software internally and is telling employees to switch to its own AI coding assistant, Qoder.
