AMAZON REPORTEDLY PUSHED A GAME TEAM TO REBUILD A PROJECT AROUND AI, THEN LAID THEM OFF Eurogamer reports $AMZN's Project Trident started as a co-op action game where players scaled giant Jotuns using grappling hooks and flying mounts. Sources said the original version had strong internal excitement. Then, in mid-2024, the team was reportedly hit with an “AI mandate.” The project pivoted into a Helldivers-style roguelite built around AI NPCs that could respond to voice and text commands. It later shifted again into a single-player game where LLMs could trigger special abilities or persuade NPCs. A demo was reportedly planned for the first half of 2026. Then Amazon’s October 2025 layoffs hit. The Project Trident team was cut and the game was scrapped. Amazon Games says AI was not the reason for the layoffs, calling it part of a broader strategic shift.

Sektori’s solo developer Kimmo Lahtinen can now pay himself a living salary thanks to the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. Lahtinen is from Finland and worked for 13 years at Housemarque on games like Resogun and Returnal before creating Sektori all by himself over more than four and a half years. It is a fast twin-stick shooter with roguelike elements and a strong techno soundtrack that feels a lot like Geometry Wars. The game released on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox in late 2025 and received very good reviews, with a 97% positive rating on Steam. Even with the praise, Lahtinen only covered his basic costs and paid himself no salary, as he said: “but that still leaves me with zero salary for 4.5 years.” The Nintendo Switch 2 version that launched changed everything. “I’m happy to now report that with the Sektori Switch 2 launch I’ve pretty much recouped a living salary for myself too. Total sales are at about 30,000. The Switch 2 launch has been very well received so thank you everyone who’s jumped aboard.”

According to estimates from Alinea Analytics, Saros is selling slower than Returnal, even though the PS5 player base is much bigger now than in 2021. The analytics firm estimates Saros sold a little over 300,000 copies in its first two weeks. Some analysts believe the game may struggle to recoup its reported budget if sales do not improve Sony has not released official sales figures for Saros as of May 12. Some say that the slower sales are due to roguelike shooters remaining a niche genre, while others point to the $70 launch price.
