Sir Andrew John Wiles, born 11 April 1953 in Cambridge, England, is a British mathematician. He proved Fermat's Last Theorem, which asserts no positive integers a, b, c exist with a^n + b^n = c^n for n > 2, by proving the modularity theorem for semistable elliptic curves. Wiles worked secretly for seven years and announced his proof on 23 June 1993 at Cambridge. An error was corrected on 19 September 1994 with Richard Taylor. The proof was published in 1995 in two papers totaling 129 pages in the Annals of Mathematics. He has been a professor at Princeton and Oxford. Wiles was knighted in 2000, received the Abel Prize in 2016, and the Copley Medal in 2017.
