When sadness meets justice. This photograph of Shani Louk, taken after the October 7 attack, was seen around the world. It became one of the defining images of that day and, for many, a symbol of the brutality inflicted on innocent Israeli civilians. I welcome every effort to identify and bring to justice those responsible for planning, carrying out, and participating in the October 7 massacre. I commend the work of Israel’s security forces and intelligence services in pursuing those individuals, no matter how long it takes. History has shown that those responsible for acts of terrorism against Israel are pursued for years. The perpetrators of the Munich Olympic massacre were hunted down over time, and many believe the same determination should apply to those responsible for the atrocities of October 7. Those who organized, directed, or took part in these attacks should know that time does not erase responsibility. They will be held accountable, wherever they may be found. There should be no safe haven for those responsible for the murder, kidnapping, rape, and other atrocities committed on October 7. h/t @stevemaman

The shock and sadness of 9/11 lingers in the collective memory, and on Friday the US will — for a day at least — try to rekindle the common purpose and sense of a shared experience as it marks the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.

With great sadness we learned about the passing of former @EU_Commission VP Siim Kallas. Through his public career he helped shape Estonia’s EU path and key European policies, from transport to administration. Our condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.

It is with great sadness that we heard about Lam Wing-kee’s passing last night. He was a truly brave man who spoke truth to power, telling the world about #China’s# kidnapping of Hongkongers, secret RSDL jails and forced TV confessions.
