Chinese researchers have discovered a thriving colony of protected green sea turtles in lagoon seagrass beds on China's Huangyan Dao in the South China Sea, confirming the presence of a mature, interconnected coral reef-seagrass ecosystem that provides high-quality habitats for sea turtles and other marine fauna. The preliminary counts put the local turtle population at over 50 in this island lagoon.

OIL SPILL HITS IRAN’S QESHM ISLAND Iran is battling an oil spill off Qeshm Island, with pollution reaching beaches near a breeding ground for endangered sea turtles. The spill’s source remains unclear, but cleanup efforts are underway. Environmental risks have risen sharply during the U.S.-Iran war, with the International Maritime Organization recording 65 confirmed shipping incidents across the Strait of Hormuz and Middle East since March. A separate oil spill is also being addressed near Oman’s coast.

Earlier this month, the City of Starbase was excited to support residents, local fishermen, @SpaceX volunteers, and @SeaTurtleInc in rescuing 266-lb loggerhead Arlen from Boca Chica Beach jetties. She’s since laid 60+ eggs, been tagged, and released into the Gulf.
