Tonight, many of our fellow Floridians will begin observing Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement:  the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Many will fast and spend the day in houses of worship, reflecting on the year that has passed and renewing their relationship with the Almighty through fasting, prayer, and charity.   I wish all who are fasting a meaningful fast and extend my best wishes that in this new year you be blessed with good health, peace, and prosperity.

Tonight, Jews all over the world put everything down. Yom Kippur is the one day of the year when the noise stops. No work. No food. No distractions. Just a full and honest accounting of who we were this past year and who we intend to be in the next one. What I love most about this day is what it asks of us. Not to be perfect, but to be honest. To repair what we broke. To forgive what was done to us. To begin again. My family arrived in Canada in 1956 with almost nothing. Every year on this day I think about them, and about how much of what I have was built on their courage. To everyone fasting tonight and tomorrow, an easy and meaningful fast. G'mar chatima tova.
