On August 1st, 1944, The Polish military resistance organization The Home Army (Armia Krajowa) went into battle against the German occupiers.
The signal to begin the uprising was a coded message broadcast over the radio: "It’s raining, it’s pouring."
After 63 days of fighting, more than 200 000 Poles had lost their lives and the Germans proceeded to destroying 90% of the city's buildings.
