One of the new, buzzy jobs in Silicon Valley is the AI Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), an engineer who is embedded within a client organization to help customize solutions, such as building and tuning agentic workflows that suit the client’s particular needs. I’ve heard from people who are wondering anew about the FDE career path since OpenAI and Anthropic started building new teams to place FDEs within client organizations. The rise of FDEs for AI workloads is one way AI is creating new jobs (and why the jobpolcalypse narrative of upcoming job market collapse is false -- there will be many AI and non-AI jobs). However, I believe there will be far more AI Engineer jobs than FDEs, as I explain below. The FDE role was pioneered about two decades ago by Palantir, which sent engineers to government locations to work on secure, air-gapped networks. In addition to having good technical skills, FDEs need communication skills and sometimes business skills. For example, they may need to speak with clients to understand their needs, formulate a strategy to prioritize projects, explain complex technology, and respectfully push back if a client asks for something unrealistic. They’re enjoying a resurgence because of the amount of work involved in taking an off-the-shelf LLM and building it into a custom agentic workflow that fits particular business needs. However, I believe the number of AI Engineer jobs will be far larger. A company might accept a few FDEs to be embedded within its organization. But most companies will want far more of their own employees working on their projects. While my organizations do hire FDEs, we hire far more AI Engineers! Also, a common client concern is that it is hard to find vendor-neutral FDEs — they are, after all, there to deeply integrate a particular vendor’s product into a company. In this moment when it’s hard to predict which AI service will be the best one in a year’s time, optionality (the ability to pick whatever vendor turns out to fit best in the future) is very valuable. In contrast, letting FDEs tightly bind a company’s processes significantly reduces optionality. Right now, I see surging demand for AI Engineers who can build software applications using AI software components (like LLM prompting, agentic frameworks, evals, etc.) and effectively use AI coding agents (like Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity CLI, and OpenCode). As the AI Engineer role matures, I expect it to fragment into more specialized roles, like the generic Software Engineer role from decades ago fragmented into frontend, backend, mobile, data engineering, devops, and so on. What will be the future, specialized AI engineering roles? I don’t know. Perhaps there will be AI FDEs, LLMOps Engineers, Evals Engineers, AI Data Engineers, Harness Engineers, and other roles we don’t have names for yet. But for now, I see a lot of AI engineers who are generalists create a lot of value. Skilled AI Engineers are in very high demand! Today the @ObamaFoundation brought together leaders, activists, and experts from around the world for our #DemocracyForum# to discuss everything from rebuilding trust in our institutions, to the challenges and opportunities that come from AI, to the changing ways we consume information. I also talked about how, when it comes to creating an economic system that supports and sustains our democratic values, we need young leaders to help us think and act anew. I couldn’t be more inspired by the next generation of leaders I’ve met who are creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Reality is not fragmented. It is one seamless, mercilessly interconnected system where every domain bleeds into every other without permission. History is psychology inscribed across time. Psychology is neuroscience wearing a human mask. Neuroscience dissolves into biology, which reveals evolution, which exposes culture, which births religion, which encodes mythology, which forges symbolism, which shapes language, which sculpts thought, which awakens consciousness, only for consciousness to loop back and question the entire chain. The same archetypes surface in Sumerian tablets and modern advertising campaigns. The same cycles of expansion, hubris, stagnation, and collapse repeat from Rome to the Soviet Union to the algorithmic empires rising today. Power concentrates through identical mechanisms whether in ancient courts, central banks, or social media platforms. Belief systems operate like operating systems, installing narratives that feel like truth until the next upgrade or crash exposes their code. Look at the patterns. Civilizations rise on shared myths and fall on accumulated lies. Economies boom on credit and illusion, then fracture under the weight of unpayable reality. Technologies accelerate human capability while exposing human frailty. All of this now forces the oldest question anew... What is intelligence, what is consciousness, and what remains sacred when code can mimic both? Biotechnology invites us to rewrite our own source code while we still barely understand the moral operating system that should govern it. Human beings are pattern seeking animals armed with savanna brains navigating planetary scale complexity. We crave certainty in a probabilistic universe. We trade long term truth for short term belonging. We normalize the monstrous one compromise at a time until the center cannot remain. Cognitive biases, status games, tribal signaling, fear of ostracism, these ancient circuits still drive boardrooms, elections, and revolutions. Trauma echoes through generations. Incentives shape behavior more reliably than ideals. Power corrupts because the architecture of dominance was wired long before language existed. Yet the same species that builds debt pyramids and weapons of mass distraction also composed symphonies, split the atom, decoded its own genome, and launched minds beyond the visible. We contain both the abyss and the stubborn light that refuses to look away. Consciousness may be the universe experiencing itself through fragile, temporary vessels, flawed, magnificent, and still capable of astonishing courage. We stand at a convergence unlike any before. Exponential technology collides with ancient human nature on a finite planet. Narrative warfare fractures societies faster than truth can travel. Systems grow too complex for any single mind to grasp, yet too fragile to survive their own unintended consequences. The old maps are burning. The new territory demands synthesis, not specialization. Radical honesty, not comforting ideology. First principles thinking over inherited dogma. Most will look away. The pattern has always favored sleepwalking. Comfort feels safer than clarity. Division feels easier than integration. But a few feel the ache of the deeper pattern. They sense the wheel turning faster, the stakes rising from national to civilizational to existential. They recognize that small surrenders today compound into collapse tomorrow. The choice remains brutally simple. Awaken to the interconnected architecture or become another echo in the repeating cycle. See the relationships between power and belief, technology and meaning, incentive and outcome, or repeat the tragedies with better tools. Integrate the hard truths from every domain or let the fragmented illusions steer us over the edge. This moment is not just another chapter. It is a threshold. The species that survived ice ages and world wars now faces the question of whether it can survive its own success. The universe does not owe us continuation. It only offers the raw material and the brief, burning opportunity to become something wiser than we were. Most never will. Some already have. The rest of the story is still unwritten, and the pen sits in our hands whether we admit it or not.
