A woman purchased this bust at a Goodwill store for just $34.99, only to later discover it was a priceless 2,000-year-old Roman artifact. But after making the find of a lifetime, she learned she couldn’t keep it or sell it. In 2018, antiques dealer Laura Young was browsing a Goodwill store in Austin, Texas, when she spotted a 52-pound marble bust tucked beneath a table with a $34.99 price tag. She bought it, strapped it into the passenger seat of her car, and took it home. After consulting auction houses and experts, she discovered it was an authentic Roman sculpture dating back about 2,000 years. The bust had originally belonged to the collection of Bavarian King Ludwig I and was displayed at the Pompejanum in Germany. After the building was heavily damaged during World War II, the sculpture vanished. No one knows exactly how it ended up in Texas, though officials believe it was likely brought to the United States by a returning American soldier. Because Bavaria had never legally transferred ownership, Young could neither keep nor sell the artifact. Following years of negotiations, it was displayed temporarily at the San Antonio Museum of Art before being returned to Germany in 2023.

French antique opal bib necklace, circa 1860.
I bought an antique mirror that reflects five seconds into the future. It was a neat trick—until tonight. I walked past it and saw my reflection freeze in terror, staring directly at something standing right behind me in the dark.
