AI chatbots are increasingly used as life coaches, counselors, and therapists. Developers rely on mental health experts to test whether responses are safe. New research finds that expert disagreement makes that process unreliable; the scholars propose a path forward:

Our campaign created this chatbot, and clearly labeled it as a parody, to highlight Supervisor Chan’s abysmal record on affordable housing, public transportation, education, and San Francisco’s economic recovery. These are critical issues for San Francisco’s future, and the chatbot was designed to focus only on her record. To deflect from Chan’s awful record of obstruction and inaction, her campaign bombarded the chatbot with repeated malicious questions — about her accent, her race, her citizenship — in order to generate a false narrative they could peddle to the media. The chatbot refused them every time.  Having failed at that effort, Chan’s endorsers, including Speaker Emerita Pelosi, are now making baseless claims about the chatbot, which is clearly labeled as a parody. No reasonable person would believe the website is from Connie Chan. Chan and her supporters are aggressively trying to delegitimize the website precisely because they know it effectively communicates Chan’s horrible record on housing and so many other key issues. This is classic deflection. San Franciscans deserve accurate information about her record. The chatbot makes that record easy to see. It is particularly ironic that Speaker Emerita Pelosi is expressing concern about AI, when Speaker Emerita Pelosi played a key role, aligned with Big Tech, in killing my landmark AI safety bill, Senate Bill 1047, a bill that was broadly supported by pro-AI regulation advocates, labor unions, national security experts, biosecurity experts, and many progressive leaders. As the only candidate in this race who has regulated AI corporations, I look forward to taking that fight to Congress to ensure AI serves people and not vice versa.
