coworker: i can't make the 6pm meeting
coworker saw my vacation photos and said “traveling alone must be lonely” meanwhile i was in japan doing whatever i wanted, eating wherever i felt like, moving at my own pace. honestly, i’ve felt lonelier at his wedding, sitting at a table full of people I’d never see again.

Coworker br🍂ought donuts. First real sugar I've had in weeks. Almost cried
My coworker Junko brings a small furoshiki cloth to work every single day, wraps her lunch box in it with a specific fold, and unwraps it at noon like she's presenting evidence at trial. "You could just use a bag," I told her once, watching the whole elaborate folding ritual for maybe the fiftieth time. "Same result, less effort." "Same result, less care," she corrected. "My grandmother taught me this fold. It's called otsukai-zutsumi, meant for carrying something you're bringing to someone else, technically. I use it for myself because I decided I'm someone worth wrapping something nice for too." I laughed, thought it was a cute bit of philosophy dressed up as lunch admin, until the week she brought an actual gift wrapped the same way for our department's retiring receptionist, Marlene, who'd worked there thirty-one years and was leaving with barely a card signed by half the floor. Junko's gift was small, modest even, but the presentation stopped the whole break room…… the fold precise, corners crisp, tied with a care that made a fifteen-dollar candle look like something priceless. Marlene actually teared up, said nobody had wrapped her anything that carefully "since my mother was alive." "See," Junko told me afterward, refolding her own lunch cloth for the next day. "The wrapping is the message. The gift is just the excuse." I bought myself a cloth that weekend. I still can't get the fold right. I keep trying anyway.
