Dick Harmon joined Cougar Sports to discuss resource allocation between Kalani Sitake and BYU: Q: My biggest question mark right now is resource allocation. What is it that Kalani wants, and what have you learned about that conversation? Dick Harmon: I'll give you an example. During a football game, you have donors walking around with highly valuable sideline passes. I know of one case where a guy has donated $1,700 in his life to BYU, and he's standing on the 50-yard line with the team. Kalani has no say on that. Another example is the loges sold to donors and corporations. They make a huge contribution, but where does that money go, and who determines it? What about parking and free tickets? The person with access to those tickets has a tremendous amount of power. If you have a Thanksgiving pie and everybody has their fingers in it, but you're the mother who cooked it and you have no control—how would you feel? Q: I always say you want to eat what you kill, right? Dick Harmon: Exactly. If the athletic department is bringing in $155 million, and the football program is generating $100-$120 million of that, don't you think the football coach ought to have a say—or at least some transparency—in where that money is going? Dick Harmon of the Deseret News joined Cougar Sports to respond to whether this is a long or short term fix for BYU Athletics: Q: Do you think this is a short-term organizational design, or is this long-term? Dick Harmon: I think it's short-term. There's a lot of restructuring yet to be done regarding the business of running an athletic department. There might be some new people hired and some new faces coming in. This is a Band-Aid right before the season. Q: So it's a Band-Aid right before the season. What does the future look like from an organizational design standpoint, and what role does leadership play in all this? Dick Harmon: I think that's yet to be determined. As of today, I don't think that's been fully examined. For us as outsiders to draw up the future organizational charts—we can't do that because I don't think they even know yet. Q: Interesting news coming out of BYU. What are some of the gems from this piece for those who haven't read it? You mentioned positive things; there isn't a better time to be a part of BYU athletics, with strides being made in basketball, football, cross country, track and field, volleyball, and golf. Moving forward, Brian Santiago is going to oversee basketball and the Olympic sports. Do you think that's long-term? Dick Harmon: That's not for me to say, but for the immediate future, yes. He's done a fantastic job with Kevin Young. Recruiting has been off the charts for BYU history. The basketball program has been phenomenal under Brian Santiago. This week, 30 senior enlisted leaders from across the Navy came together for the inaugural Enlisted Readiness Council to identify systemic barriers to readiness and develop actionable recommendations for Navy leadership. Established by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle, the ERC creates a direct connection between senior enlisted leaders across the Fleet and the Navy’s highest levels of decision-making. Throughout the three-day council, members received guidance from the CNO, briefs from Capt. Charles Harmon, Enlisted Plans and Policy branch head, and Vice Adm. Scott Gray, commander, Navy installations Command, and received a Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) program update. Harmon provided updates on enlisted personnel policies and initiatives, including Senior Enlisted Marketplace and Billet-Based Advancement, while Gray addressed shore readiness and installation programs and services that support Sailors, families and Fleet operations. The discussions gave council members an opportunity to examine Fleet-raised issues alongside the leaders responsible for many of the policies, programs and resources that shape a Sailor’s service. Members worked through issue papers submitted from across the Fleet, examined potential barriers to change and identified issues requiring continued action through the ERC. The council will meet regularly and provide readiness assessments, recommendations, and issue-focused analysis to CNO for consideration, while issues requiring additional work will continue through the appropriate committee and tracked to ensure issues raised from the Fleet remain visible as decisions are made and actions move forward.

Southeast Area Command Front Desk Temporarily Relocating! Beginning September 1, front desk services currently available at Southeast Area Command (SEAC) will temporarily relocate to the new Hollywood Area Command building while renovations are completed. The SEAC front desk will remain open through Friday, August 28. On Monday, August 31, anyone within the SEAC jurisdiction needing front desk services, including filing a police report, obtaining a copy of a report, or requesting a background check, should visit South Central Area Command, Convention Center Area Command, Northeast Area Command, or LVMPD Headquarters.
