One thing I have never really understood in some Islamic settings is religious police. Where I come from, we call them Hisbah. I don't understand why someone's prayer, fasting, hijab or even what they choose to sell should become the business of religious police. You can teach people. You can advise them. You can tell them what Islam says. But why should the state force a person to practise? Because this is where I struggle with the whole idea. If a person only prays because he knows someone will punish him, or a woman wears hijab because she knows she will be arrested without it, what exactly have we achieved? You didn't make them believe. You only made them obey. And if religion needs the police to make people obey it, then maybe we should be honest about what we are actually defending.
