Scottish colonization in the Americas involved a series of small, short-lived attempts during the 1600s and early 1700s. Nova Scotia was the first major venture, with settlers arriving in 1629, but political agreements soon returned the territory to France. In the 1680s, Scots helped settle East New Jersey, establishing Perth Amboy as the capital. Stuarts Town in South Carolina served as a refuge for persecuted Covenanters before being destroyed by regional conflicts. The most ambitious project was the Darien scheme, a trading colony on the Isthmus of Panama in the 1690s. Poor planning, disease, supply shortages, and Spanish opposition caused its collapse, resulting in the financial loss of £400k (£71m inflation-adjusted)—about 20% of the nation’s capital. It crippled Scotland’s economy and was a major factor in its Act of Union with England in 1707, thus forming the United Kingdom. #archaeohistories#
