The resignation of Cambridge's Jason Arday, as the university investigates his qualifications and honorary appointments, is a British story. But there is a lesson in it for us at home. He denies wrongdoing, and the inquiry will run its course. Still, the case should prompt every Irish university, State body and public institution to ask a plain question: how rigorously do we verify the credentials, titles and claims of the people we appoint, fund and celebrate? Standards in public life cannot be selective. They either apply to everyone, or they mean nothing.
