Most travel videos tell you where to go. I’m more interested in why a place is worth knowing in the first place. That’s what I’ve been trying to do with The Timeless Traveler, and now I’m bringing it to YouTube. The newsletter has given me a place to write about cities, small towns, old hotels, strange traditions, historic buildings and places that get a lot more interesting once you know what happened there. Writing about those places is one thing. Being able to actually show them is another. I’m not interested in making another channel full of generic “10 places you need to visit” videos. I want to take somewhere you may know almost nothing about and, ten minutes later, have you looking it up on a map. Why was this town built here? What happened on this street? Why are people still making something the same way they did 300 years ago? What should you actually pay attention to if you ever go? Maybe it’s a library in Portugal where bats have helped protect the books for generations. Or a tiny town on the Northern California coast where Yurok history, a working fishing harbor and the redwoods all sit within a few miles of each other. Those are the stories I want to tell. The old building everyone walks past. The food people have been making for generations. The strange local tradition that makes no sense until somebody explains where it came from.
