My father kept every voicemail my late mother ever left him, forty-one of them, none longer than thirty seconds, mostly about pickup times and grocery lists, and refused for years to let his phone carrier "upgrade" him out of the storage plan that held them. "You could transcribe them," I offered once, trying to be helpful, watching him fight with a customer service rep for the third time that year over an account he could've closed and saved money on years ago. "Keep the words at least." "I don't want the words," he said. "I want her saying 'em." I understood it better after he finally played one for me, unprompted, a Tuesday afternoon for no occasion…. her voice, younger than I remembered her sounding, asking him to grab milk on his way home, nothing more, nothing sentimental about the content at all. "That's it?" I asked. "That's the one you play the most?" "It's not about what she says," he said. "It's that she says it like she'll be home in twenty minutes. Like nothing's wrong yet." He still pays for a phone plan two generations out of date just to keep those forty-one messages intact, refuses every offer of a backup, a cloud, anything that might feel like letting someone else hold them. I don't know what happens to them when he's gone. I haven't asked. I don't think either of us wants to be the one to bring it up first.
