Yan “August” Danilko survived the Olenivka massacre. A fighter of the Azov Brigade, he defended Mariupol for 86 days before surrendering from Azovstal on orders from his commanders. On the night of July 28–29, 2022, russia blew up the barracks where Ukrainian POWs were held. Yan survived the blast — but suffered shrapnel wounds across his body, and nearly 50 fragments remain inside him. His right foot had to be amputated. He later lost sight in his left eye. And this was only the beginning. He was sent back into russian captivity — Taganrog, Kyzyl, Perm Krai. Three years of torture, humiliation, overcrowded cells and unimaginable abuse. He was even removed from exchange lists because, without a leg, he supposedly could not fit into a KAMAZ truck. In June 2025, Yan finally came home. He survived. He endured. He returned. But 93 Azov fighters who survived the Olenivka massacre are still in russian captivity. Four years later, Olenivka remains an open wound.
