Every parent needs to hear this. In June 2000, CDC, FDA, WHO officials and vaccine manufacturers met for two days at the Simpsonwood Retreat Center near Atlanta. No press. No public announcement. CDC epidemiologist Thomas Verstraeten presented data from roughly 100,000 children. Early analysis showed a dose-related association between thimerosal — the mercury preservative in childhood shots, including the hepatitis B vaccine given at birth — and neurological problems: speech delays, tics, seizures, ADHD, and autism. Verstraeten later said he was “stunned” by what he saw. Instead of pulling the preservative or warning parents, discussion turned to lawsuits and how to handle the data. One attendee said they were “in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits. Thimerosal was used because it was cheap for multi-dose vials. Safer single-dose options existed. Autism identification went from about 1 in 10,000 in the 1970s to 1 in 31 children today — 1 in 12.5 boys in some California data.
