building the perfect system is not doing the work...
you set up the notion workspace, configured the obsidian graph, installed the todo apps, watched every setup video... and abandoned all of it, every time
productivity fails for one reason: achieving anything requires doing the work, and that is a completely different activity from preparing to do the work
a productivity system is procrastination that feels like progress
checking boxes releases dopamine, so you keep checking boxes instead of doing the uncomfortable work that moves you toward your goals
the system also taxes the brain that runs it.... you spend processing power remembering where things go, which tags to apply, when to review, how to link
it's like using your computer's processor to monitor the processor
the best organization emerges from doing real work, never from planning before it
deep in a problem you discover what needs tracking, building the system first means guessing
this is the fix i recommend, using a notebook and a pen:
- write down goals for the year, broken into quarters, then months
- prepare every day one simple list of what needs to get done before you sleep
- finish something, cross it off, move to the next thing, write down whatever new comes up
zero maintenance overhead, complete flexibility, immediate clarity, a brain free to work at full capacity
the less time you invest in productivity systems, the more productive you become
