Wildfires west of Bordeaux have burned roughly 42,000 hectares--or 104,000 acres. Climate alarmists immediately blamed an "unprecedented drying climate," but the local records disagree. At Bordeaux-Merignac, the rainfall record has been relatively flat since 1920. Mont-de-Marsan and Pau-Uzein show the same fluctuations, but no long-term drying trend. In fact, the past decade was wetter than average across much of Europe, including France. This winter just gone was also wet, and so produced abundant vegetation. Summer heat then dried that growth into fuel. Ignition is another key factor. By late July, at least 560 people had been arrested over suspected wildfire starts in France, Greece, and Portugal alone. Meanwhile, Europe's burned area is tracking at its lowest level in the GWIS record. The global total is also at the bottom of the range. Bordeaux proves that severe fires still happen. It does not prove the planet is entering an "unprecedented climate-driven drought." The wider trend remains clear: the world is burning less.
